The temblor hit at 5:39 a.m. about 8.5 miles west-northwest of Kailua-Kona, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It had a registered depth of 6.8 miles.
Some 160 residents in the South Kohala, North Kona, South Kona and Kaʻu districts reported feeling the earthquake, according to the USGS.
